Our last competition was The Las Vegas Coast Casinos $1,000,000 "Pick the Pros" contest. More than 70,000 professional and amateur bettors were required to make selections for every Sunday NFL event. Each contestant was allowed up to five entries. We entered the maximum, five entries. We had four entries finish within the top eight places including a third place finish, just two wins behind the champion who won $300,000. The winner had 177 wins and 65 losses. Our best ticket was 175-67.

A POSTED HERE:
11/20/2009 Q: If Joe Michaels is the handicapper for both Sports Monitor's Executive Selections and Joe Michaels Personal Best, What's the difference between the two? GOOD QUESTION! A: " Seems like a reasonable question to ask." However, there is just as reasonable an answer I'm sure will satisfy the inquiries. The short answer is "two different handicapping methods........"Sports Monitor's Executive Selections" are weighted more towards an objective type handicapping method. All of the typical conservative stats as they apply to the sport in question are used.......win/loss, home/away, night/day, points scored for and against, offensive/defensive rankings, rushing/passing yards, turnover ratios, conference/non conference, recent/historical numbers, left handed/right handed, grass/turf, weather, venue and a host of other statistics all contributing in varying degrees to an end result we call a power rating. The database is constantly being adjusted, tweaked if you will as the seasons progress and circumstances change. Now, anyone can crunch numbers, it's how those numbers are perceived and the weight given to certain stats is one reason why some cappers are on one side of a contest and some on the other. The key to our success is how our own database interprets the numbers. We have incorporated a proprietary method resulting in a percent advantage one team has over another. We begin with specific criteria to even consider a game for release. The higher the advantage the higher the star rating for a given event. It is all much more complex involving input from many years of experience and practical application that will remain private. In any case I think you get the picture. "Joe Michaels Personal Best" plays on the other hand are weighted more towards a subjective type handicapping method. It begins with much of the same routine as described above. However in this case to use a variation of the common real estate motto "information, information, information" is the key element. Along with trends, angles, revenge, team chemistry etc. Contacts with coaches, players and management. All used to extract information. Where were the players the night before? Any glitches in their travel arrangements? Did they or do they fly commercial? Charter or have their own team plane? Did they have to take a long bus ride? Are we talking about millionaire athletes or college kids? Is this an important game or just a routine engagement. How does an injury affect the score or outcome. A couple of examples I've used in the past; When Michael Jordan was out of a game in the Bulls heyday. The knee jerk reaction was to focus on the under since Jordan wasn't their to score points. Many interested parties including the lines makers didn't give enough credit to Michaels' defensive abilities. Not only was he a great scorer, he was one of the best defensive players. Losing his defense it turns out often had more of an effect on the total to go over than the common tendency to focus on the no Jordan take the under mentality. Is a team traveling to play after or on a major holiday? Do we have a 20+ point favorite playing a military academy. Some very interesting plays developed in the earlier parts of our country at war. Teams/Coach's had no taste for running up the score once the game was in little doubt. The play got even better when the big favored team's coach had a history of not running up scores. After all who really wants to beat up on or embarrass kids that may be going to war after the season and may not return? I have a whole book on these type situations I've developed over the years. I have my own line analysis theory tracking the spread evolution from the opening number to various points up until game time. Many situations become available that the current line has not adjusted for. NFL teams in the mind set they just have to walk on the field and the game is over. It is no concern of theirs they have to win by 10.5 or 14 points for their backers to cash a ticket. Once again information! Having the ability to get it, use it and profit from it. I hope we can put this question to rest. In any case I think you get the picture. As the saying goes "It's a tough way to make an easy living!" Best of luck Joe Michaels
